Moving Day Checklist

The Big Event
The truck is in the driveway, the coffee is extra strong, and the keys are almost in your hand. Today is the day! To keep your sanity intact while navigating the chaos, follow this step-by-step guide to a flawless Moving Day.

🔑 The Access-Granted Phase
You can’t move in if you can’t get through the front door. Priority one is getting your tech sorted:

  • Activate Your Fob: Head straight to the management office or concierge to pick up and test your electronic fobs. Ensure they work for the main entrance, the elevator, and any amenity spaces.
  • Set Up Your Buzzer Code: Don’t make your friends (or delivery drivers) wait in the cold. Link your phone number to the building’s entry system so you can buzz people in remotely. The concierge will activate this for you.
  • Lock Verification: Ensure your fob works smoothly with the deadbolt.

🖐️ Quick fob note: For the first five seconds after locking your door, the knob is still engaged. If you turn it immediately, it will simply unlock again. Wait a full five seconds after you hear the bolt click. Then, turn the knob to confirm. If locked properly, the knob should rotate loosely without opening the door.
More about fobs.

🚛 Managing the Chaos

  • The Elevator "Hand-Off": Meet the building staff to have the elevator put on "service" mode. This locks the doors open and gives you exclusive access for your booked time slot.
  • Point Person Duty: Assign one person to stay with the truck and another to stay in the suite. This prevents "where does this go?" bottlenecks and keeps your belongings secure in the loading dock.
  • The Final Sweep: Before the movers pull away from your old place, check every closet, the dishwasher, and the "secret" cupboard above the fridge.
  • Get the lay of the land: have the concierge take you on a quick "walk-through" of the path from the loading dock to the service elevator, so you're ready to direct your movers when they arrive.

🏠 Setting Up Your Sanctuary

  • The "Furniture Map": Have a rough floor plan ready. Your movers will work much faster if you can tell them exactly where the "heavy stuff" goes on the first try.
  • Utility Check: Flip the switches! Make sure the lights turn on, the toilets flush, and the hot water is running. If something is off, you can flag it to management immediately.
  • Wipe Down Surfaces: Before the boxes get stacked high, give the kitchen counters and bathroom vanity a quick once-over. It’s much easier to clean an empty room.

💡 Pro Tips for a Stress-Free Move

  • The "Hardware Box": Keep all the screws, allen keys, and remote controls for your furniture in one clearly labeled Ziploc bag. Tape it to the back of the TV or the underside of the bed frame.
  • Don't Forget the Pets: If you have furry friends, set up a "safe zone" with their bed and water bowl immediately so they don't get spooked by the heavy lifting.
  • The "Open First" Box: This is the holy grail. It should contain:
    • Toilet paper and paper towels.
    • Basic cleaning spray.
    • A box cutter/scissors.
    • Hand soap and a towel.
    • Bedding, so you can sleep without opening a single box
    • Trash bags.

Pack this like you’re going on a 3-day camping trip in your own living room.

1. The Right-Away Tools

  • Box Cutter/Scissors: You can't start unpacking without these.
  • The Hardware Bag: Put all the screws, bolts, and Allen keys for your bed and tables in a clear Ziploc bag.
  • Basic Tool Kit: A screwdriver, hammer, and measuring tape.

2. Bathroom & Hygiene (The Non-Negotiables)

  • Toilet Paper: Pack at least two rolls. Building bathrooms are notoriously empty on move-in day.
  • Hand Soap & Paper Towels: For all the dusty hands after moving boxes.
  • Shower Curtain & Hooks: There is nothing worse than wanting a hot shower after a long day and realizing you’ll flood the bathroom.
  • Towels & Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, and shampoo.

3. The First-Night Comforts

  • Fresh Bedding: Pack your sheets and pillows into this kit so you can make the bed the moment the frame is assembled.
  • Change of Clothes: Include pajamas and a clean outfit for the next morning.
  • Phone Chargers: Keep these in your pocket or the side of this bag—you’ll be using your phone a lot for logistics.

4. Kitchen & Fuel

  • Coffee Essentials: Your coffee maker (or a jar of instant), mugs, and a spoon. Moving day is fueled by caffeine.
  • Paper Plates & Cutlery: Don't worry about washing dishes on night one.
  • Water & Snacks: Stay hydrated! Pack granola bars, nuts, or jerky to keep your energy up until the celebratory pizza arrives.

5. Cleaning Quick-Stash

  • All-Purpose Spray & Cloth: For a quick wipe-down of the counters before you put your toaster away.
  • Trash Bags: You’ll generate a lot of small trash (tape, plastic wrap) immediately.

💡 The Pro Strategy:
Use a bright-coloured suitcase or a box wrapped in neon tape. This makes it visually stand out, so no one accidentally buries it in the garage or a back bedroom.
